You may be fishing but your not surfcasting. If your just randomly throwing your plug into the water and hoping something gets snagged by it rather than studying moon, wind, tide, structure and bait, then you are not maximizing your time on the water and your not surfcasting in my opinion.

Hell as long as you are happy doing that, enjoy it and keep it up. To each there own. If you want to be a surfcaster you got to do it properly. Wifey says that fishing is fun, surfcasting is like a 3rd job.

Some folks like myself don't have the luxury of the 3rd job theory.I go and fish when an opening in my life is avaible.Sometimes that window is an hour sometimes it's 8 all i know is when i have it i tried to capitialize on it.It has a calming effect 4 me.

There is structure on every beach, it's just not as obvious. The ability to identify soft structure is important for success from any beach. Look for points, bowls, bars and cuts. I would focus mostly on the cuts especially the ones that go staight out through the first and second bars. They offer the most options and highest probablity.

Dave i know there's structure on everyone beach and there's rocks and gravel underneath that u can't c and i do fish those bars and rips it's just not as blatant in some areas as others theres a millon tons of sand on Plum Island and it changes every year after the noresters rip thru as a matter of fact the last 2 days the residents have been on tv trying 2 save there houses which r about 2 get swallowed up by the sea.It changes very quickly up here.Where if i go 2 Lynn Shore Drive That's more stable. The mother of all boulder fields is there.Every place is different. And u have 2 adapt to those changes wither u're 10 year honey hole is there or it's gone in just 4 months. So in terms of blind casting i think sometimes u have to find that little something were it's not so obvious and u're going to have to make those cast to really see or feel what's underneath the suds there's no way around if u want to be sucessful sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesn;t.That's y they call it fishing.Tight lines to all.
