Default Block Island

Probably going to be heading to Block island, RI during about the 2nd week of august. I have been reading up on the fishing there in August and the striper, blue, fluke, and even bonita fishing all seem to be pretty good.

I was just curious what any of you guys have to say? What to use, how to fish... any other useful info?

We will be targeting stripers most of the time probably, but wouldnt mind getting a bonito.

Thanks

I went to BI for about 6 years in a row around late July. There is always something to catch. The coast guard channel is a pretty good place to start and relatively easy place to fish. Will be bass and blues there around first light, and maybe a shot at bonito. Fluke can be caught there all day. I'm not much of a fluke fisherman, but it was pretty automatic if you had a few sandeels or silversides to bounce off the bottom.

Never really fished around the jetty at the entrance into New Harbor until one day when I snorkeled around there and saw enough big bass and blues to make me get out of the water.

Can't say I know too much about the other parts of the island from shore as I usually fished from a boat

Heres a shot from last summer. Went out there for two nights with the gf. She agreed to let me bring a pole, no waders though! It rained the whole time, save 10 minutes.

HUh, just had a thought,,,I always want to fish BI from my boat, but being a 10' bow rider, dont want to risk it, seeing probably way to rough either on the way out, or way back, or both knowing my luck,,,, but,,, am I crazy thinking I could put my truck with boat in tow on the ferry, and just launch it over there? Hahahahah I know, this sounds retarded,, but,, what do you all think? Hahaha
Oh man,, I have a feeling I should not have asked this.

Lots of fishy water around the south side. Never fished the surf but had good results from the boat just off shore. Lots of boulders. The surf can get big so watch the weather.

I have never fished there, but most from what i've heard...people are looking for roiled up whitewater.
Bones near old harbor too. Book a charter, they will tell you!

Beaver- Do you snorkel there a lot? I heard there waters are super clear. I really would like to do that! I plan on getting a full suit this year...so look out fish! (ah, they will hear my doggie-paddle 2 miles away!)

I've snorkeled there a little bit. I'm not the best swimmer so I try not to push the envelope too much. I like to stay fairly close to the beach or jetty so I can save my own life when I start to panic.

With that being said, yes the water is generally gin clear, unless a storm has dirtied it up. Lots of life around the entrance to Old Salt Pond (New harbor). Can't say the same for the breakwalls around old harbor. They were deserted except for a few lost bluefish and a few poorly placed lobster pots.
