Default Perfect

These are the best I've found for large bucktails. Sure you can pay less for the typical northern variety but they have little if any hair this long.

[QUOTE=Pete_G;22288]Next time you're at the shop Jason, give us an your review of what's on the wall as it relates to how things were 6, 7 plus years ago.

The quality over that time period really hasn't changed at all. It depends maybe what people are looking for. I've got such a large/varied supply of bucktail now that I've become picky for a certain, specific quality. The biggest change I would point out is that in comparison to the Thames St. days, the quantity hanging on the wall and the variety of colors is a lot more/better - quality still pretty much the same. I think today one has a better chance of finding what they want compared to several years ago.

Regarding rose colored glasses - you're going to get that from people. I remember reading a thread on another website a while ago. Some guy posts that he ordered some tail from SWE, that he didn't get what he wanted and that the service was more or less lousy. If I remember correctly, Peter had to respond with dates and times of communications to this guy and offers of refunds or exchanges; why would someone slam a store like this and leave out such relevant info? The thread was basically filled with other people's comments saying how great the quality/service at the store is. You got 10 people saying it's great and one person saying the exact opposite - it's just the way of the world I guess.

Jason,

I sure will. He's one of my favorites at the shop. He's having major back surgery coming up and is gonna be laid up for a while. A shame, but its been bad for a while.

I will give him a "hello" and "speedy recovery" for ya!

Ok, here my opinion on bucktail. In the past the edge had the best long straight bucktail around. Period. Now when I've gone to the shop the bucktail is smaller and doesn't come close to the bucktail of past years.
I haven't been to the shop in a couple of years but if your telling me that the bucktail that you now carry is comparable to the "old Bucktail" I'll give it another try.
By the way , one of the weakest supply points of any fly shop is the quality of it's bucktail. Every shop has this problem. FishHawk

i think this subject could be debated for the next hundred years,it is a natural product and everyone has his or her own opinion of what is perfect.maybe we could get some genetisist to clone "the perfect tail",then again who is right about what is perfect.so the debate continues................

If you haven't been to the shop in a couple years I'm sure you'll enjoy what you'll find, and I'm not just talking about the bucktail.

There is without question more tying materials on hand then at any point in the shop's history.

Just a follow up after just recieving my last order. I e-mailed the guys requesting a few things on my order for bucktails and they got back to me right away and said they would do the best they can to satisfy my requirements. I ordered around 14 tails and they did a GREAT job in trying to get what I needed. As mentioned many times before, its not an exact science, but they got me what I was looking for.......not a bad tail in the bunch and most were exceptional. I may return a couple because one of the guys I ordered for wanted slightly different colors, but that had nothing to with the bucktail quality.

Obviously, nothing beats going to the store yourself, but with their effort they make it a close 2nd! The key is if you have a very particular requirement in terms of the tails you need is to call or e-mail and tell them what you're looking for and they will really work to accomodate ya!
