Default tins/metals

The post about pt jude sea scallops got me thinking. What are everyones favorite tins? Has anyone out there not thrown one at all? my personal favorite is the pt jude pojee with or without the tube tail. I think it has caught fish every time it left my bag.

To be honest I've never had much luck with tin, probably because I have zero confidence with them. They have their time and place, and I use them when I feel they will outproduce other lures, but they just haven't for me. I've caught plenty of blues, albies, and bonito with them but the striped ones haven't exactly jumped all over my offerings.

I've found that my hookup ratio with tin is pretty poor. Maybe it is just me, but in the ditch especially, I have a hard time getting a good hookset with tin (I mainly use crip herrings). I always have some in my bag so maybe some day it'll produce a nice fish for me and my opinion will change. Or maybe I'll just buy some PtJude stuff and see if that helps.

Hook ups for me are also higher when I'm using swimming tins as opposed to jigging ones like the crippled herring. Sometimes I get hit on the fall and it's pretty tough to get a solid hook set. When they're swimming, I'm always tight to them so it's easier to set the hook.

also consider the fixed vs. swing hook...there are some swing hook bucktails available now but I feel much better trying to stick a fish with a fixed hook rather than a swing hook...just personal preference though...good thing about bucks and most tins is that they are small enough that most fish will suck them in and clamp shut and you can stick them right in the lip and you are generally fishing them within feet of the bottom if not bumping the bottom, I've found better success focusing my attention on the bottom half of the water column rather than the top half...fishing these forces you to do that...but...there are a number of tins that will work fairly close to the surface if you desire that......
