So,

I made a trip down to a local tackleshop in NY and met with the
owner who happens to tie and sells his own bucktails.

He took the time to show me some stuff he does when
bucktailing. I was wondering if any of you who bucktail, use similar strategies.

I am pretty new to bucktailing. Really, I have only been giving it
serious focus since last spring. I fish the western LI sound from the surf
and have been employing the straight retrieve method with periodic
twitch. I mostly use a white bucktail, red/white pork rind, attached
via breakway clip. Textbook stuff.

The angler who I spoke with may be more of a boat fisherman...as
most of his reference seemed to be advice geared to fishing
from a boat...even after I mentioned a couple of times that
I fish from shore and inlets. When he demoed his technique he used a boat rod.

This is what he does. He uses a curly tail grub as a trailer for
the bucktail. He attaches it to the leader via a Homer Rhode Loop
Knot. Then he takes me to the water to show me how he fishes it.
He jumps it along the bottom. The interesting thing that he points
out is that when he stops the lead stands on its head....nearly vertical.
I would assume that the buoyancy of the curly tail is lifting the ass
of the jig up. I could see how the jig would sort of look like a
sandeel burrowing in the sand. He suggested using short
hops/skipps along the bottom.

Most of the books out there suggest against using a jigging
technique...I know that there are different camps in terms of
trailing embellishments.

Does anyone use the above technique in the surf for Striped bass?

Does anyone use the homer rhodes knot?

Does anyone use soft plastics and pork during a session...and do you swim each differently?

Thanks.

Hey Guys,

Sorry I've been MIA, but don't fret, I'm back in Montauk ready to kill it!!!

....that or get killed working to death in my family's restaurant :p ....and if any of you make it here, I expect some patronage!!!

That said, after a winter where tuna were sighted right through February it is no surprise that reliable reports on their presence are already around. Inshore, the BFT have been making sporadic showings everywhere from right off Newport to the Canyon's with the largest numbers still 20-40 miles south of the block. The biggest issue is that no one has given them a solid chance yet but hopefully next weeks call weather will see some anglers on the water (Earl???). These early fish can go either way being both very selective and spread out or simply feeding wide open. As always it boils down to bait. My top tip is to make it an early shark/tuna split as many area's like the horns and wrecks like the ranger will offer both species. Current water temps are significantly warmed as you head SW of Montauk.

Offshore the local commercial boats have been reporting good numbers of BFT and tons of Mako's, Thresher's and more. Overall our local Canyon's are still a bit cool for pelagics but the breaks are quite nice. There is one prospect worth seriously considering which is a finger of 63-66 degree water slowly pushing NE and into the area around block canyon. The cool edge is already on the shelf and hopefully someone will likewise check it out during next weeks predicted calm spell. While many wait for warmer temps to make the run, the canyons can truly light up early on as the fish are hungry and without pressure. Just the other day, the infamous Canyon runner tempted similar water temps off of NJ and scored both yellowfin to 40lbs as well as BIG EYE to 120. That would be a banner trip any time of the season.

Lastly, the Cape should see a big push of fish before the month is out. Historically the mindset has been to wait till the 1st full moon. However, the past few seasons have seen the first push's right around Memorial day. Just be sure to cover water and not forget to peak at the outer cape as well as the bay.

Last, a quick reminder to the brave and lucky few who beat most of us out there.....there are well, only a few of us. If you do get into to trouble help is a loooong ways away. Be sure to check all of your safety gear, dress appropriately, and don't be greedy with the intel!!!

Tight lines,
Is there a distance you should give commercial guys? Something maybe I may want to get a heads up on rather than find out the hard way. I know its a different time but I still remember being a kid and my stepdad, who was a commercial digger, would always tell me not to mess with pots. He said lobster guys were the craziest.

I think anything that pulls your drag in the other direction this time of year is a big bonus. When you get to realize the attributes of a product that you'd had high hopes for, hear your drag sing a bit and then bump into some buddies in the middle of the night...it's a great evening....donning the new STORMR Jacket recently I set out to see if it met the needs that I think Pete had in mind when he brought these in. I'd been eyeing similar products for nearly a year and was beside myself when I saw that he'd decided to add them to inventory. I was asked by Greg "was it cozy?" and I think my response was "exactly"....I usually wear a nylon shell or kayaking paddle top over my wetsuit depending on conditions. The nylon top drains easily, has the sleeves cut off and has a big chest pocket for storage and most importantly ..a hood..the paddle top is similar but no hood and long sleeves and the skirt removed...neither keep me particularly warm on long cool and/or windy nights and especially when it's really blowing and I want my head protected...The STORMR jacket provides a number of advantages....it's easy to get on and off of the wetsuit, it did retain some water when getting out(sleeves mainly) of the drink but no more than my paddle top...the added buoyancy that it provides more than makes up for any inconvenience in carrying water. I miss a chest pocket but there are two exterior pockets and one interior and they did not appear to fill with water curiously and the things that I usually hang around my neck and then tuck into the chest pocket were moved inside the zippered front of the jacket....my head has never been happier on a night with pretty good gusts carrying a chill and with water temps still teetering around 50 degrees. The hood is soft and snug fitting and is "quiet"...unlike my nylon hoods in a strong blow making it difficult to keep one ear on the surf...I can envision many more nights of comfortable fishing thanks to this addition and on this night, it allowed me to stick around longer than I would have otherwise until the fish showed.....

I tried to beat the moon and take advantage of the huge tide before it rose from the sea, the front that was coming through was not going to arrive in time to curtain it's glow so I figured I had a couple of hours of darkness....the fish arrived shortly after the tide turned and about ten minutes after the big orange orb cleared the horizon ...the first one stuck was nearly an accident as I retrieved my bucktail all the way to the rocks and was thinking about the next cast when I hung up right below my feet...not wanting a projectile aimed at my head I jiggled and pulled to one side and then the other trying to shake the hook free of the obstruction...suddenly the obstruction began ripping considerable line from my spool and I was in complete disbelief...it stubbornly battled my efforts to bring it back to where it had met my jig and exceeded every expectation that I could have had for the first decent fish of my season....Mrs. W had been requesting a larger specemin to print for a couple of weeks now, so this one was going home...back at it a short time later a light gulp of my bucktail and reflexive yank of my wrist and it was on again, this one finding the jig much farther out and right on the bottom...with more room to roam this fish really put on some bursts and any chill and lethargy that I might have been feeling was completely gone...I landed it took a quick pic with it's near carbon copy and set it enthusiastically back on it's way...

<a href="http://www.edgeangling.com/forums/attachments/general-fishing-forum/4808d1336605658-field-test-funny-story-other-fun-struff-imgp0002_6.jpg" title="Name: IMGP0002_6.jpg

the third fish was considerably smaller and was all head shake no drag take, it shook enough to toss the hook and I laid into another cast, I'd been peeking over my shoulder at the moon which was just spectacular and mesmerizing and noticed something glimmering, moving on the rocks near where I'd left my fish, I assumed it had wriggled itself toward the water and felt fortunate that I'd noticed...as I reeled and moved down the rocks to intercept the presumed escapee something barked at me sounding like a muted goose...I realized that a seal was halfway between where I'd left my fish and the water and so I continued reeling as I chased him back to the water, barking back at him and feeling a bit guilty at how helpless he was trying to get back to where he wriggled from....he hit the water and swam directly into my line and then popped his head up to check on my whereabouts, I looked for signs of gnawing on my fish and then played whack-a-mole with him for a bit, putting my light on him as he'd pop up and look at me from one spot and then another....I saw no reason to continue fishing and made my way back with one thought...I still needed to cross some deep water at high tide with a fish in tow and a seal in the area..I wasn't really sure how this was going to turn out but didn't have much of a choice...about a quarter of the way across I switched sides as I side stroked and spotted a dark round object bobbing on the surface a few feet behind me...my heart skipped and I prepared for battle in my mind but....then I realized that it was the lobster buoy that I'd seen on my way out...that was a relief....

I got to see Greg and the Toastman before the night ended and enjoy some quality bs'n...so good to be fishing again

Mr's W and I had a fish printing party the next night, the larger format provided some great results and hopefully she'll prepare a batch of mango salsa for the grilled bass.....

Just today (thanks to Michelle) we were able to get the rest of the Simms products...

Just today (thanks to Michelle) we were able to get the rest of the Simms products up on the website. Has anybody here ever owned any of the Simms gear? I've owned a few Simms products myself, and have noticed a trend. Everything Simms I own is my favorite _________.

My favorite socks are Simms...

My favorite waders are Simms...

My favorite shoes to wear to work are Simms...

My favorite glove/mittens are Simms...

My favorite Jacket I have ever owned (far and away by a huge margin) is, you guessed it, Simms (a previous year's windstopper Jacket... but kind of like this one)...

Now Simms gear isn't inexpensive by any means, but if it's in your budget, and you find something you need... I'd be hard pressed to more wholeheartedly recommend a brand than I can with Simms.

Check out all the Simms Gear available through The Edge

From what we've seen, many are intent on making this the "Year of The Bucktail Jig", and with good reason as year after year bucktail jigs are responsible for some of the more notable catches up and down the striper coast.

In the past, it has been problematic to find a vise with a jaw large enough and strong enough that sported a base heavy enough to provide the stability needed when tying bucktail jigs.

This issue has been addressed with two new Saltwater Edge Bucktail Jig vises.

There are two models (a rotary and non-rotary) to choose from. Both sport the key feature you want when pumping out your own bucktail jigs.

Check them out in this video:

You can find the vises in the online store here:

Discovering our Headwaters: A New England Tale – by Thomas Enderlin Hardship breeds resilience, and the New England coast is known for its burly lobstermen and tough skinned communities nestled on the edge of the sea. But evolution capitalizes on these everyday obstacles, creating slow change that allows one to adapt and opportunistically prosper in [...]

A recent delivery of wooden Northbar plugs has been flying mostly under the radar for awhile now. We were kind of 'hoarding' until we could get nice images and get them up on the web. Among the other plugs that we've had before, this batch includes a limited supply of JR bottle darters. The JRs look EXTREMELY fishy, weigh in at 1-3/4 oz and sport a slightly smaller (bitesize) profile than their larger cousins.

Check out the plugs in the NorthBar Wood Batch:
I really need someone that can do some work to my 2000 Yamaha, 2-stroke, with carbs, 200 hp, outboard. Was running great, and the other day, it started to sputter, and cough, and run real poorly,,, It still starts and runs, but, I cant drive it like that, so if anyone is interested in making some side cash, or you know anyone, Please, let me know. I will pay cash on the spot. Send me a message here, or call me at (401) 824-6880
