Fall Forecast -Hardtails

Right now we're somewhere in limbo.

It's been hot, ungodly and unseasonably so. Yet, merely a week ago I swore the heat of summer had fled for good as I lounged about savoring the first crisp evenings. "Earl" however, well clearly his intentions have misaligned themselves with my own. While ransacking the vacation isles for every last ounce of tropical energy he allowed a wedge of putrid hot air to snake it's way north, inundating Little Rhody in near record temps.
Image: http://www.goes.noaa.gov/GIFS/HUVS.JPG

And while the current chatter is all about that spinning mass to our south Earl will come to pass, the air will cool down and the fall we all so lust for will come to fruition.

Even now, as people line up at Fort Adams to trailer their boats its possible opportunities are being missed. In the years that Skipjack Tuna have made a coastal appearence it has been in the very moments prior to a major Tropical storm or immediately on its tail that they were found.
Image: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-ash1/v188/207/85/657334414/n657334414_328821_3133.jpg
Other hard tails likewise seem to react favorably not only due to the blatant dinner bell but due to the true blue water that finds itself violently thrust upon the shallow coast. Despite coastal proliferation of land born derbies our local waters are often very blue following storms such as Earl. Every year reports of various funny fish begin to flood in from Buzzards bay to Montauk; species like Mahi, Cobia and King Mackerel all taking treats intended for otherwise. These fish are but by catch in our efforts to trick the more reliable hard tails Bonito and Little Tunny. Bonito have been keeping us entertained since early August with sporadic showings more places then not. However, these edible hardtails are truly a late summer treasure and, unless your drifting ACK's Bonito Bar, will likely vanish within the first couple weeks of September. However, their fleeting feeds will be replaced any moment by the much more violent, intent, and extended feeds of False Albacore.Image: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v188/207/85/657334414/n657334414_328830_8103.jpg Consensus holds this will not be a year for 3-5lber footballs but much larger 10-15lb torpedo's given the grade that has already been encountered on Nantucket. Unlike Bonito, these inshore speedsters are hear to stay at least into mid-October and, if past seasons bare evidence, as late as November. Via boat or shore the classic locations stretch from the East to West wall's in SOCO, Narraganset's shore particularly by Hazard Ave., most all of Connicutt Island's southern half, Ft. Adams to Castle Hill, all of Newport's southern cliffs, and most of the Sakonnet river basin. Truth be told these fish will and do show up most anywhere but, particularly early in their arrival look for them to show in areas of deep water adjacent to large estuaries. These fish are hear to feed and will move into Narragansett Bay as far north as Barrington if the juvenile bunker and such have yet to migrate to the ocean front.

Overall Hardtails, be they an ever rare Skipjack or an all but promised Little Tunny, tend to feed on two types of bait. Throughout the season there are of course the peanut bunker. Early on there is more importantly, our beloved "white bait". Whatever your local kitchy name might be, what we're referring to are Bay Anchovies, Image: http://virginiastriperfishing.com/images/bay_anchovy.jpg 1"-4" members of the Sardine family that seem to be contributing more and more each season to the diet of most every inshore Nor'East gamefish, Stripers included. Migrating in astoundingly large schools commonly seen as large purple or red patches miles away these Anchovies are often the backbone of early season blitzes. Unlike most residential forage species these small filter feeders have been surviving in the ocean front all season, very few taking shelter in shallow estuaries. A summer spent escaping mass predation by living in small and widely spread schools, their gathering into larger schools can generate truly gluttonous feeds. Overall they are, to be blunt, slow. Bass will be seen slurping them with no more effort then a trout on a drowned midge. Even Falsies, speed demon's that they are, will seem to take a more "laze fair" approach. And yet, this often this equates to some truly difficult fishing.

Effectively the predators are not hunting individuals but forageing on their entire pod at once. Think of it as a whale eating Krill. While some bass can be fooled with a gaudy out of place presentation, the same rarely holds for Hardtials. On the fly end focus match the hatch with tan and white fly's 1"-3" long like the Rhody ChovyImage: http://www.edgeangling.com/miva/graphics/00000001/flygear/flies/rhodychovy_g.jpg . Don't be afraid to try all white patterns as well as the injured and recently regurgitated are fair...fare. On spin gear similar treats like 1/2oz - 1oz Maria jigs, Deadly Dicks, and of course the Jumpin' Minnow will all have their moments

More then anything if you find bait you need to stick with it. A shoal large enough to catch your eye will not go unnoticed and brief as a feed may be, you want to be prepared when it occurs.

As September gives way to October the feeds will mirror the ever fleeting time these fish have left. Schools will condense and track major bait schools close often leaving seemingly barren oceans where a day prior occurred wild carnage. By then much of the white bait will have past and the remaining hardtails will be focusing on larger forage such as 2-4" peanuts and various spearing and sand eel shoals. Here, larger flies take the helm but one needs to have a variety of options for that "just in case" scenario. With spin gear most the same tins will work with the need for some broader metal entering the fray. A small 1oz Crippled herring can be killer. Overall October finds Albies willing to show up just about anywhere in their quest for calories and one needs to consider this constantly. Many a guide has spent all day offshore hunting tail only to find it raging right in port on his return.

Hardtail season is short, wild, and something many of us have been eagerly anticipating. If for some reason you don't get your fix locally you can chase them down to Harker's Island - that is if Earl leaves a Harker's island at all.

Tight lines

The Agitator is one of my favorite plugs to fish during dusk & dawn hours.
I'm a surface junkie and nothing gets the blood pumping like a good surface strike.
I'm often asked about the techniques used to make the Agitator "Do it's thing" so I decided to do a video that will be in the Sept issue of "Surf Bytes".

I figured it would be easier to show the technique in a video as opposed to trying to describe it with words.

So here I am in bright sunshine, just trying film the rod motions, when this 10 lb bass comes and crashes the party!
Maybe I should sleep in and fish midday from now on!

With the recent deaths of 2 surfrats this week, one in Gloucester and one in 'gansett, it's a good time to remember how dangerous the water can be. With the incoming storm, lots of folks, myself included, will hit the suds in search of our friend, but this is not the time to think ' I can get out to that rock' ........especially wetsuiters...... be careful and be Safe..........
Surfcasters are like a family, don't take risks this weekend.........

Good Luck to all............. and think Chartreuse Bucktail....:D

Amazing tape, I've even used it to repair a leak in the fuel line in my old truck, and on the boat for leaks in the water pump hose.

Best abu lube out there

This is THE lube to use on 6500 abus. Combines with their ceramic bearings, I can cast bait rigs over 100yds. It's especially good becasue unlike other lube's I've used, it won't cast off the bearings the first time you use it and will stay on even if you dunk the reel by accident.

great for kayaking

Perfect for anyone who fishes Florida, kayaks, or fishes offshore. This has saved my ears from as nasty sunburn more than once, and with a hat and sunglasses, cuts glare to almost nothing. Flats fishermen, makees it easier to spot bonefish...no glare, more fish.

go-to kayak gloves

These are perfect for warm weather kayaking, and they're great for fly-fishing as they protect your fingers from line cuts. I've even used these in the surf when I couldn't find my aquaskinz gloves. I do wish they dried a little faster, they stay damp unless there's a lot of sun.

Its a splash top

This is a great balance between a hard core dry top and light rain coat. it will be tight with a bulky sweatshirt wish the length was longer and the neoprene wrist closures are not like a gasket and will leak when submerged but for 50 bucks compared to $250 works for me and free shipping !!!

This is the best tarpon hook I have ever used. My landed to jumped ratio increased dramatically with this hook. It is the only type I use now for tarpon.
Light cure material

The light curing allows for great control. Haven't used the flex as much as the flow. The flow is great for affixing eyes to flies.

Some of the popular surf sizes are out of stock in both the Blue Frog and Andrus bucktails in white. Need to stock up for fall. Any chance of a re-stock?
