I'll take a shot at it Aubrey..they are butt ugly...even painted up pretty, still awkward looking and compared to the other stuff on the shelves, probably not a fast mover...another reason why the might not be built in wood is the following: I made a number of plugs with that wiring layout that I loved and fished really well but with the line tie on the underside like that it's really difficult to get the plug on a spinner and get it epoxied correctly, it would cause a nightmare I would think for someone trying to produce them in mass unless you only secured them at one end on a rotisserie or something, I don't know, I imagine someone might figure it out but i know that it was a pain for me...

I think you're on to something as to why nobody makes them from wood- the through wire was off center which would make it a pain to drill and then epoxy the plug.

They don't need to be pretty. Heck, they probably don't even need to be epoxied. Or maybe just a thin coat brushed on. I throw even my nicest plugs into the rocks and at the bluefish with reckless abandon. Once a plug hits my bag its life expectancy is very short indeed.

Squid patterns! I think this plug really is a squid imitator.

Also the original Reverse had a hole so it would take on water and increase its casting distance- a wood one could be weighted for the same effect. They should cast like a bomb and then slither all over the top on the retrieve.

I might even take a stab at it with some old swimmers- just re-wire them and add some tail weight. Won't be perfect as the wire won't run the way the old Atoms did but it might work.

I love the reverse atoms...Anco lures makes some out of plastic that are very similar to the original. They cast like a rocket and the price is right.

Danny Pichney made them...he called them "reverse squid"...they're very rare, maybe because they were tough to make...

this was my version...they have tremendous spook-like action...long travel left and right...Pichney's was touted as a BIG water plug, good caster that would hold in big surf and most effective with a lot of the paint flaked off

I think they are available in some local RI tackle shops and are called the golden squid or the colored squid. I have some in the amber and rootbeer colors both work excellent during the squid runs. I can post some pics tonight.

I could make those no problem.

Because of the PVC, there is no issue with the line tie or thru wire.

Do you have size specs and weights on them? I could get a few cranked out to test.

Let me know.
